Globaloney – The myth of globalisation

In Duncan Bucknell’s recent article the myth of globalisation, he has you wondering if we live in a global world or in the world of globaloney! I am of the opinion we are in globaloney, with all the politicians and managers thinking we live in a globalized world.

According to Thomas Friedman the “world is flat”, the collapse of communism and rise of Internet has broken down the barriers to global competition. He argues it is a level playing field now. And for more evidence, visit Bangalore in India. The call centers are filled with people who pick up 1-800 calls with “Hi, I am Sam!, let me look at how I can help solve that problem for you”. This is globalization for you.

The myth of gloablization lives in the minds of business people only. I think this has more to do with getting the most out of the marketplace and justifying with outsourcing of jobs. When it comes to IP strategy, there is one for Australia, another for US and one for each country. Then there are various currencies, travel restrictions, tariffs and more barriers – globaloney.

The places where I find we live in a closer world are at forums, youtube, ebay, lulu, amazon, linkedin where you get what you want without any barriers.

So what do you think – gloabalization or globaloney, which one are you in?
